Audi Lineup Strongest Ever
With one new model following on the heels of another over the past three or four years, Audi’s on a roll.
But you ain’t seen nothin’ yet: In June, Audi releases the TT, a radical-looking coupe which will be followed six months later by a roadster. The TT is one of a handful of cars in history to emerge from the design studio and survive the march to production unspoiled by engineering practicalities or marketing studies.
The TT will be available in front- or all-wheel-drive (Audi’s Quattro system) and powered by either a 180-hp 1.8-liter 20-valve inline four with single intercooler, or a 225-hp dual-intercooler version.
August saw the debut of the A6 Avant, the striking all-wheel-drive station wagon version of Audi’s luxurious near-luxury A6. A 200-hp, 2.8-liter five-valve V-6 engine drives the A6 family, and the transmission is the sport-automatic Tiptronic.
Like the sedan, the Avant offers a choice of three interior “environments” and standard features include seat-mounted front air bags, dual-zone climate control, 140-watt stereo system with subwoofer and split folding rear seats.
Buy the Cold Weather package and treat your rear-seat passengers to toasty buns.
In March, an A6 Quattro sedan with five-speed stick becomes available, and the A4 Avant, introduced last year, gets the 1.8-turbo four as an optional powerplant.
