CV Dumps Gonzaga Prep Bears Clinch Berth In Regional Tournament
Inquiring minds want to know why Central Valley didn’t bury Gonzaga Prep Friday night in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game at Spokane Falls Community College.
The Bears had the incentive: Their only loss came a week earlier at the hands of the Bullpups.
And, the Bears blanked the 10th-ranked Bullpups for an incredible 13:33 span Friday that included a big goose egg in the second quarter.
Despite that, fourth-ranked CV only beat the Bullpups 55-43 in a game that pleased their coach to no end - and not just because they clinched an automatic berth in the regional tournament with the win, before a crowd of about 2,000.
“This bunch I have is pretty competitive,” CV coach Rick Sloan said. “Prep came out to our place and beat us. They had something to prove and they responded well. The thing about offense that you don’t have any control over is sometimes the shots don’t fall. If you play good defense, you’re always in the game. Our guys did a good job. I’m not unhappy.”
Central Valley’s offense was significantly better than it was in the 51-50 home loss. The Bears shot 14 of 26 (compared to 18 of 45 the first time) and forced the issue enough to get to the free-throw line 37 times for 27 points.
“We just ran the offense,” CV post Bryan Depew said after scoring 22 points and grabbing six rebounds. “The focus was on rebounding, especially out of the zone. We knew they would crash everybody.”
Greg Johnson, who scored 20 points in the first meeting, including the buzzer-beater for the win, knocked down an NBA-depth 3-pointer from the right wing to put Prep up 12-10 with 1:28 to go in the first quarter.
Depew quickly responded with a three-point play and two free throws to close the quarter. He opened the second quarter with a pair of foul shots and a drive to make it 19-12 CV.
After a Kyle Boast steal led to a basket with 5:11 left in the half, though, Prep’s defense, which held CV to 14 points in the first half of the first game, resurfaced. The only points the rest of the half were two CV free throws that made it 23-12 at the break.
“Offensively, especially in that second quarter, we got too impatient,” Prep coach Mike Haugen. “We threw the ball away a lot, which we didn’t do in the first game. But I was not displeased with the defense at all, for the most part. In the second quarter, that kept us in there.
Kelvin Bacon had five points in a 7-0 spurt that pulled Prep within 29-24 just before the end of the third quarter.
But in the fourth quarter, Jake Hebden took over with nine of his 15 points.
“Depew is just the man, basically,” Hebden said. “They realized they had to stop us inside, that’s why I tried to penetrate,” Hebden said.
Hebden hit seven of nine free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
