Five years ago: At the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, American Tommy Moe won the men’s downhill, defeating Kjetil Andre Aamodt by 0.004 seconds.

One year ago: Dr. David Satcher was sworn in as surgeon general during an Oval Office ceremony. The United Auto Workers reached a tentative contract agreement with Caterpillar Inc.; union members rejected the deal, which was revised and later ratified, ending a bitter dispute that lasted more than six years.
