Woolf Leads Vandals Past New Mexico St.

Susan Woolf hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Idaho Vandals to a 70-57 Big West Conference women’s basketball victory over the New Mexico State Roadrunners (4-18, 1-9) on Friday in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Vandals (14-9, 6-4 Big West) jumped out to a 44-29 halftime lead on the strength of 52 percent shooting (16 of 31) from the field.

Jennifer Stone came off the bench to score 11 for Idaho, while Alli Nieman chipped in with nine points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

North Idaho 63, Treasure Valley 45

Mandy Lindhe scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead the Cardinals to a Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over the Chukars in Ontario, Ore.

Jodi Fisher added 12 points for NIC, which improved to 15-8 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

Men’s basketball

Treasure Valley 83, North Idaho 79

Brandon Burney took advantage of a 14-for-14 effort at the freethrow line to finish with a game-high 35 points as the Chukars held off the Cardinals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game at Ontario, Ore.

Jerry Petty scored 27 points to lead North Idaho, while Johnny Goodman added 23 points. Teammate Reggie Battee collected 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Baseball

WSU 21, New Mexico St. 7

Washington State collected 23 hits, five by sophomore Jason Grove, en route to a season-opening, non-conference victory over the Aggies at Las Cruces, N.M.

Grove finished 5 for 7 with four runs scored and three RBIs, while Shawn Stevenson added four hits, including a double, five runs scored, two stolen bases and three RBIs.

WSU left-hander Wade Parrish allowed just one earned in six innings of work to pick up the win.

Portland 5, Gonzaga 1

Pitchers Stosh Jackson and Ben Reynolds combined on a three-hitter to lead the Pilots over the Bulldogs in a season-opener at Pilot Stadium in Portland.

Gonzaga starter Matt Siwek took the loss, giving up four earned runs in a five-inning stint.

Troubles mount for Neuheisel

Rick Neuheisel, the Washington Huskies’ new football coach, finds himself with another problem, this time for playing recruit Domynic Shaw in an informal game of 3-point basketball shooting.

The Pac-10 will look into the new allegation against Neuheisel. Under NCAA rules, Neuheisel’s game with Shaw, from Oakland, was considered a tryout.

Neuheisel confirmed the violation did take place.

Shaw, a cornerback, was declared ineligible last week by the Huskies - along with four other signees - after they were visited by Washington assistant coaches when the coaches weren’t supposed to be in the recruits’ homes.

Linehan headed for Louisville

Scott Linehan, offensive coordinator at the University of Washington the past three seasons, has been hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Louisville, head coach John L. Smith announced.

Linehan, 35, has worked with Smith before. He was a quarterback at Idaho while Smith was an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1982-86. Linehan later worked on the Idaho staff under Smith as wide receivers coach and as the offensive coordinator-quarterbacks coach.

Cougars land JC lineman

California junior college lineman Garviea Freeney signed a letter of intent to attend Washington State University next fall.
