Minding our own business is an American tradition, but increasingly the world’s business is our own. Connections, a new feature in The Spokesman-Review, shows how global events affect Inland Northwest readers. Here are some countries the newspaper is watching, and their relation to its readers:

Russia and the Ukraine - The Spokane area has more than 10,000 new residents who immigrated from Russian-speaking countries.

The Balkans - War in Bosnia draws Spokane-based planes and troops to Europe.

Pakistan - Often the largest buyer of Eastern Washington’s top farm product, white wheat.

Romania - Local charities support orphanages in that country, which may have Spokane’s newest Sister City.

Japan - The top foreign destination for Washington-produced goods.

Honduras - Spokane’s Episcopal Diocese supports Santisima Trinidad, a medical mission on the hurricane-ravaged coast.

Saudi Arabia - One of the fastest growing markets for Washington goods.

Ethiopia - Spokane doctors donate their services every year to help children in that country.
