Cold-Shooting Lc Still Beats Chillier Prep

Sometimes low-scoring games are a credit to good defense.

Sometimes they’re ugly.

Judging from the coaches’ reactions, Lewis and Clark’s 49-43 basketball win over Gonzaga Prep at Squinty Hunter Fieldhouse Tuesday night was ugly.

“We missed a lot of easy shots and we didn’t shoot free throws very well all night,” victorious coach Terry Reed said. “You would think if you held a team to eight points in the first half you would be able to pull away.”

The Tigers only led 19-8 at halftime because they missed 20 shots and six free throws.

“You saw the shots,” losing coach Mike Haugen said. “We go out and miss about five layups. The officials let it be a physical game and we didn’t react. We were passive, tight.”

The Bullpups were 3 of 19 in the first half with 14 turnovers.

The two teams are tied for third place in the Greater Spokane League with one game to go. Both, however, are assured a home game next Tuesday in the first round of the District 8 tournament.

Prep got a free throw with just under a minute left in the first quarter and LC got the only basket, a putback by reserve Tyler Black with 13 seconds left to lead 5-1.

Matty McIntyre got Prep’s first basket, a layup at 5:04 of the second quarter. The lead got as high as 15 on back-to-back nice plays by LC. Jonathan Hook hit a rainbow 3 from the left corner and after a turnover, Eric Avery connected on a lob-layup to Justin Defour.

Each little surge by Prep was stopped quickly by the Tigers, who were up 37-26 after three quarters. A 10-1 run early in the fourth quarter pulled the Bullpups within five and Greg Johnson’s tough shot made it 43-40 with 1:25 to play. But Avery scored on a layup to blunt the momentum and Prep couldn’t knock down a shot.

Bryan Depew and Patrick Libey shared 29 points and 16 rebounds as the fourth-ranked Bears clinched a tie for the championship by pulling away from the visiting Pirates with a 20-point fourth-quarter.

Depew and teammate Kyle Boast each scored 19 points.

The Saxons, ranked sixth in the state, gained the advantage on the Panthers with a 23-point second quarter then pulled away to an easy victory with four players scoring in double figures at the Arena.

The Highlanders edged closer to the sixth and final playoff spot by hanging on to defeat the Wildcats, who missed 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter at Shadle Park.
