Two of the nation’s best-known tabloids - the National Enquirer and Star - are part of a struggling publishing empire being acquired for $300 million by a New York investment firm headed by former Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman. American Media Inc. is being purchased by Evercore Partners, which also is assuming $470 million in debt.

CNN News Group, moving to expand its offerings to a health-hungry public, has formed a strategic alliance with an Internet-based health care information business called WebMD.

Northwest Airlines passengers may now use their portable cell phones aboard planes and in the jetways connecting planes and terminals whenever at least one of the aircraft doors is open.

Cable channel Lifetime Television has named its first female chief executive. Carole Black, president and general manager of KNBC-TV, the Los Angeles NBC station, was named Lifetime’s chief.
