Churches Plan Special Services, Events During Lent
As Lent continues, many North Side churches are planning weekly services or Bible studies in preparation for Easter. Some of these events are listed below.
St. Peter Lutheran Church, 4620 N. Regal, will have worship service at 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday through March 24. Each service will be preceded by a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Deer Park United Methodist Church, 113 E. Second, will host a weekly brown bag luncheon series each Tuesday at noon through March 30. The theme of the series is “Gathered Around the Cross.”
During each session, a guest speaker will tell the story of Jesus’s crucifixion from a different person’s perspective, including Mary, the two thieves, Peter, Pontius Pilate and the people in the crowd.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will have services each Wednesday during Lent at 7 p.m. Each service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m.

A Lenten study group will meet weekly at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 545 E. Providence. The group will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today and continue each Wednesday through March 24. The topics include the virtue of charity and the sacrament of Penance.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada, will have services at noon and 7 p.m. each Wednesday through March 24.
Orthodox Lent begins
For members of Orthodox churches that follow the Eastern calendar, Lent begins Monday.
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington, will have a Presanctified Liturgy at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. A potluck dinner will follow.
Saint Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church will have Masses at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 1325 E. Queen.
First Assembly stages `Y2K the Play’
Members of the First Assembly of God Church will present “Y2K the Play” during several performances in the next two weeks. The play will open with a 6 p.m. performance on Sunday. Additional performances begin at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, at 6 p.m. on Feb. 28, and at 7 p.m. from March 1-3.

Calvary Chapel hosts guest speaker
The Calvary Chapel welcomes the Rev. Don McClure as guest speaker for the Men’s Night Out from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. McClure is currently serving as the senior pastor at Calvary Chapel of San Jose, Calif. He also hosts daily radio programs in the San Jose and San Francisco Bay areas.
All males are invited to attend the event. The church is located at 511 W. Hastings Road.
Hungarian dinner, dancing
The Spokane Unitarian Universalist Church will host its annual Transylvania Partnership dinner on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. The dinner will feature Hungarian food and folk dancing for all ages, performed and instructed by the Erdely Hungarian Dance Ensemble. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children or $20 per family. Proceeds will benefit the church’s partner church in Transylvania. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.
