Judge Delays Pilot Case

From Staff

A federal judge is delaying a decision for more than six weeks on how to punish a pilots’ union for ignoring his order to return to work at American Airlines.

“It’s time to cool down and take the loaded guns away from each other’s heads,” U.S. District Judge Joe Kendall said Wednesday.

The Allied Pilots Association asked Kendall to allow it extra time to examine American’s claim of $58.7 million in damages suffered when thousands of flights were grounded from 4 p.m. last Wednesday until late Saturday.

Kendall had ordered the pilots back into their cockpits last Wednesday. On Saturday, he held the union and two top board members in contempt and said he would fine them.

Kendall continued the hearing until April 12. He also extended through May 10 an order issued to the union last week to end the sickout.
