The Othello Rodeo was named “Best Rodeo of the Year” by the Columbia River Rodeo Circuit, which includes rodeos in Oregon, Washington and North Idaho.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
United Securities Bank has received a $200,000 grant to purchase and upgrade substandard housing in Ferry County. Seventy homes will be renovated for lower-income families to purchase or rent.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
Where can you see a movie in Moses Lake? Nowhere, until May. The local theater closed last month, and construction has just begun on a multiplex. Although originally planned for a February opening, North Central Construction, owners of the planned building, say May is looking more reasonable.
LINCOLN COUNTY Almira
Taxpayers in Almira gave an enthusiastic nod to the town’s recent $155,000 two-year maintenance and operations levy. More than 77 percent of voters cast positive ballots for the tax collection.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
A proposed $12 million pipeline to bring natural gas to the Pend Oreille River Valley was put on the far back burner last week. Northern Lights Inc. of Sandpoint tabled the project when Ponderay Newsprint Co. decided switching to natural gas was not in its best interest. Without participation from major companies, the high cost of the project would fall on small commercial customers.
SPOKANE COUNTY Cheney
The Cheney School Board will hold a work session at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the district board room, 520 Fourth St., to discuss School Board goals. No action will be taken.
STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah
Architect Alex Kimball, who usually designs major malls and public center, is offering to help local business owners spruce up downtown Chewelah. He says sidewalks, signage and building fronts are a good place to start.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
In a presentation to the Pullman Chamber of Commerce, Joe Harris of Pullman’s Small Business Development Center said more than 80 percent of WSU students informally surveyed say they prefer the convenience of the Palouse Mall, believed prices were more affordable and liked the selection of merchandise better across the state line in Moscow. Pullman merchants are trying to find ways to encourage Pullman students to shop downtown and better cater to student desires.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
A pickup was struck by a St. Maries River Railroad locomotive Jan. 21. Ronald Cordle, of St. Maries, had stopped at the railroad crossing on 10th Street. When he saw the flagman wave his flashlight, Cordle assumed the flagman meant for him to proceed across the tracks. The locomotive struck the Ford pickup on the front driver-side bumper. No injuries were reported. The locomotive was not damaged, while damage to the pickup was approximated at $200.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
Bonner County Commissioners are considering a weed department request to add Eurasian milfoil to the county’s list of noxious weeds. Listing Eurasian milfoil could secure money to combat the weed.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet tonight at 5:30 in the Bonners Ferry Fire Hall. Officers will be elected. Other matters of business will include hearings on special use permits and pre-application reviews on two subdivision proposals.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
Kootenai County commissioners authorized the sale of 200 used voting booths Tuesday to a Nebraska elections sales firm for $15,000. The county has also sold about 300 other booths through previous sales, replacing them with more modern, light-weight cubicles.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information about University of Idaho theater student William Hendrick, 25, who has been missing since Jan. 10. Members of the Student Theater Organization are selling yellow ribbons attached to cards with Hendrick’s picture on it to raise fund for the search. Donations can be made to the search fund at Moscow U.S. Bank, 301 S. Main. Anyone with information about Hendrick’s disappearance should contact the Moscow Police Department at (208) 882-COPS.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Wallace
The Silver Valley Alternative High School has purchased the complete CD-ROM set of National Geographic magazines through a donation from the Wallace Elks. The set includes every article, picture and map from the 100-year-old magazine. Students can use the computer program for research on projects or for browsing.

LINCOLN COUNTY Troy
The Troy City Council decided Feb. 10 that voters will determine whether to increase monthly water rates in a June 1 election. The exact wording of the ballot will be approved at a meeting Wednesday.
