Freshman reserve Mike Preston scored a career-high 17 points and powered a second-half surge that carried Pacific to a 75-59 win over Cal State Fullerton at Stockton, Calif. The win clinched a conference tournament berth for Pacific, the defending champion… . Dexter Tennell scored 24 points and Deginald Erskin added 24 as North Texas, last in the East, defeated West leader UC Santa Barbara 87-73 in Santa Barbara, Calif… . Other top scorers Thursday include Chris Bjorklund with 28 for Cal Poly. Also, Ramel Lloyd of Long Beach State, Roberto Bergersen of Boise State and Charles Gosa and Billy Keys of New Mexico State scored 20 each… . Boise State has won eight consecutive on the road.

Brock Jacobsen scored 19 points as San Diego defeated Santa Clara 80-58 in San Diego, helping the Toreros tie the Broncos for third place, half a game behind Pepperdine… . Gerald Zimmerman scored 31 to lead USF’s 75-72 overtime win at Saint Mary’s.

In a meaningful game for Eastern Washington, Matt Williams scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Montana over Sacramento State 78-50 in Missoula. The win allowed the Grizzlies to stay 1-1/2 games behind sixth-place Eastern in the battle for the final spot in the conference tournament… . Jason Hartman hit two free throws with 4.4 seconds left in overtime to give Portland State a 77-76 victory over Northern Arizona at Portland. NAU and Weber State are tied for first, with PSU one game back. Hartman, who scored 32 points, made 17 of 19 free throws.
