Ferris’ Win Over Lc Results In Rematch

Art Rojas got what he didn’t want, which comes with getting what he did.

Ferris defeated rival Lewis and Clark 56-52 in overtime at the Arena on Thursday night, closing the Greater Spokane League regular season with the forerunner of a rematch Tuesday in the District 8 girls basketball playoffs.

“I’m just glad we’re at home,” Rojas said. “I didn’t like the possibility of an LC doubleheader.”

Ferris won the No. 4 seed and a home game and dropped LC to fifth. A LC win would have dropped Ferris into a tie with Gonzaga Prep, with the seeding determined by a coin flip. The Bullpups will play at University on Tuesday.

“I hate to be playing LC more than any team,” Rojas said. “We know each other so well, it’s hard to do anything new. And I’ve gotten to know (coach) Jim Redmon very well and we’ve become very good friends.”

Despite beating Rogers 53-40 at the Arena, Prep barely avoided a Saturday tiebreaker, thanks to Raeanna Jewell. Jewell’s put-back at the buzzer lifted Central Valley to a 52-51 win over visiting Shadle Park. That eliminated Shadle Park and allowed CV to tie Mead for the GSL title. Mead, however, gets the No. 1 seed.

Prep, which started the season 10-0, ended a six-game losing streak. “Any time you lose six in a row you lose confidence,” Prep coach Mike Arte said. “But the one thing they never did was lose faith. They had a lot of faith in themselves and each other… . They’ll be pumped up.”

Ferris 56, Lewis and Clark 52 (OT)

Sophomore Katie Foster hit consecutive jumpers from the baseline and then Denise Kirstein hit a clutch 3 from the right corner to spark the Saxons in OT.

The Saxons were leading 53-51 after Foster’s second shot when Kelly McCaffery made a steal for Ferris and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Kirstein rebounded. Moments later, she found herself open in the corner.

“I just knew I had to shoot it, there was nobody there,” she said. “Bombs away.”

Kirstein came off the bench when Jenny Benzel, who led Ferris with 14, fouled out.

Sabrina Brazzle forced the OT for Ferris when she drove into the lane and pulled up for a 10-foot jumper with 5.2 seconds to go.

The Tigers got a career-high 16 from Molly Gill.

“Overall I felt better about (possibly) playing Prep,” Redmon said of the team his Tigers swept. “But we didn’t go into the game thinking that. We wanted to win the game and we thought we had the game won but we just didn’t finish at the foul line.”

Gonzaga Prep 53, Rogers 40

A 13-point win for the Pups with 11 points from the player who wasn’t supposed to play. Obviously, Prep needed Juliann Laney.

It was determined, by a doctor, Laney’s back injury couldn’t get worse and though he recommended a few more days of rest, the decision rested with the family.

She was “on call.”

Arte called her to start the second half, when the Bullpups were up just 16-15.

“We felt we needed a lift,” Arte said. “She just makes everyone better.”

Laney had seven of her 11 in the third quarter when the Pups broke away to a 36-26 lead.

“It was very frustrating, I didn’t think Arte would let me in,” Laney said. “It felt great to get back. I’ve been feeling great and right now it feels fine.”

Carly Barnes had 21 for Prep, Katie Logue led Rogers with 14.
