Rogers Pushes G-Prep To Limit

Blame it on Rogers.

The Pirates started things off by proving they can play with the best, even if they haven’t figured out how to beat them.

Gonzaga Prep rallied to edge the Pirates 60-58 at the Arena. That secured Prep the third seed in the district tournament next week. It also meant the Arena nightcap between Ferris and Lewis and Clark was meaningless, at least as far as the playoffs were concerned.

Ferris coasted to a 49-27 win.

“Nothing. The effect is nothing,” LC coach Terry Reed said.

The game - or games - that meant something were University’s 64-57 win over Mt. Spokane, despite 38 points by Casey Clark, and Central Valley’s 66-56 win over Shadle Park.

That means U-Hi and Shadle meet at North Central Saturday at 7 p.m. to determine the sixth seed.

Also, CV won the Greater Spokane League title.

Prep’s win meant LC had the No. 4 seed and a Tuesday home game against Rogers whether the Tigers won or lost.

Also, Mead got its second win, defeating North Central 65-59, to end a 16-game losing streak.

Gonzaga Prep 60, Rogers 58

The Pirates’ Brett Oglesbee tied the game at 57 with a clutch 3-pointer with 49 seconds left but the Bullpups’ Greg Johnson won it with a 3 from the right wing at 15 seconds.

The Bullpups fouled Oglesbee with 3 seconds remaining and after hitting one free throw he deliberately missed the second but Prep recovered the rebound.

“What we practice on that … is if Greg gets a good look, he takes it,” Prep coach Mike Haugen said. “At 15 seconds we call a timeout and then run for a last shot.”

Clark won a shootout with Phil Renz but the Titans got the pressure win over the visiting Wildcats.

While Clark was winning the league scoring title, Renz was pouring in 29 points, putting the two highest individual efforts of the season in the same game.
