Upstart Republic Blots Curlew’S Record Again

Leave it to Republic to ruin Curlew’s perfect ways.

Steve Davenport scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half Friday as the Class B fifth-ranked Tigers defeated top-ranked Curlew 48-41 at Colville in the Panorama League boys tournament title game.

Curlew entered with a 22-0 record. Republic also defeated Curlew in last year’s league tourney title game, after Curlew went through the regular season without a loss on the court. (The Cougars forfeited three wins.)

Republic played without its head coach Rory Rickard, who was too sick to attend. The Tigers held Curlew junior Jeremy Groth (23.9 points per game) to 11, although Groth surpassed 1,400 points for his career.

The District 7 B tournament begins Monday with Republic against Bi-County No. 4 Almira/Coulee-Hartline at 6:45 p.m. at Spokane Falls Community College. Curlew, the No. 2 seed, opens at 5 p.m. at Spokane Community College vs. Bi-County No. 3 Liberty (14-8).

Katie DePonty scored 12 of her 22 in the fourth quarter, finished 9 of 10 from the field, as the Class B top-ranked Dragons defeated the Mustangs at Colville for their eighth league tourney title in 10 years.

Wenchi Liu added eight assists and six steals, and Alyssa Henley had nine rebounds as the Dragons won their 20th consecutive game.

St. George’s opens the District 7 tournament on Tuesday against Bi-County No. 4 Valley Christian at 6:45 p.m. at SCC. Northport opens at 5 at SFCC vs. Bi-County No. 3 Wilbur-Creston (19-4).

Brent Decker and Eric Smith combined for 33 points as the Class B eighth-ranked Panthers defeated the seventh-ranked Tigers to repeat as league tourney champion at Reardan.

The teams had split their regular-season series, a pair of seven-point games.

Odessa senior Ryan Floch (1,009) surpassed 1,000 career points.

Top-seeded VC opens district at 6:45 p.m. Monday at SCC against Panorama League No. 4 Inchelium (12-10). Odessa, the No. 2 seed, opens at 5 p.m. at SFCC vs. Panorama No. 3 Northwest Christian (16-7).

Amy Fitch’s 13 points led three players in double figures as the Class B fourth-ranked Broncos defeated the eighth-ranked Falcons at Reardan to repeat as league tourney champion.

Megan Yerxa returned from a two-game absence (sprained ankle) to surpass 1,300 career points for the Broncos.

Ritzville, as the No. 1 seed, opens the District 7 tournament at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College against Panorama No. 4 Selkirk (16-8). The second-seeded Falcons open at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Spokane Community College against Panorama No. 3 Republic (18-6).

Also at Reardan, Sarah Teterud and Carli Smith scored 15 apiece as the Panthers, despite falling behind 10-0, eliminated the Tigers and earned their first berth to district in school history.

Odessa defeated the Panthers twice during the regular season, and again in overtime to open the league tourney on Tuesday, but VC advances after playing its fourth consecutive overtime game.

Odessa’s Nicole Hunt finished her career with 917 career points (minus one unreported game).

Derek Henley and Dustin Colter combined for 14 of their 20 points in the second half as the fifth-ranked Tigercats held off the Irish in an opener at Walla Walla Community College.

Pat Barry and Casey Richard scored seven apiece in the fourth quarter, and combined for 21 rebounds, as DeSales rallied from an eight-point deficit.

Both teams play again Monday at Washington State University, with DeSales vs. Pomeroy at 2:30 p.m. in a loser-out and L-W vs. Waitsburg at 8 for a berth in the championship game.

Jesse Archer added seven rebounds, and T.J. Scott six assists and four steals for Waitsburg. Pomeroy’s Seth Claasen hit four 3-pointers and Jory Feider had seven rebounds for Pomeroy.

Becky VanTine hit 9 of 15 from the floor in scoring 20, and Joanna Baldree added eight rebounds as the league-champion Bulldogs defeated the Indians at Mead High School.

Tiffany Pittman and Jessica Rohner combined to hit 12 of 23 from the field and 10 of 13 from the line for Colfax, which finished with a 44-30 rebounding edge. Reardan’s Lindsay Krupke hit 4 of 4 free throws.

The tourney continues today at Mead with Colfax against Freeman at 8:30 p.m. for a berth in the championship round. Reardan plays Kettle Falls at 5 p.m. in a loser-out.

Lindsey Floch’s 18 rebounds and 5-of-10 shooting from the floor helped the Scotties defeat the Bulldogs in another opener at Mead.

Laura Halverson’s half-court shot gave Freeman a double-digit lead heading into halftime. The Scotties hit three 3-pointers toward the end of the third quarter, two by Krista Freeman, to seal the win.

KF shot 1 of 19 from the free-throw line. Leslie Fredrickson of the Bulldogs had 13 rebounds and four assists.
