Firth Fifth By Beating Lakeside
Senior guard Shari Moulton connected on 21 points as Firth secured a 56-34 consolation victory over Lakeside for fifth place at the Idaho State A-3 girls basketball tournament in Middleton.
Firth came out smoking and enjoyed a 30-13 buffer by intermission. The Cougars went to the free-throw line for 12 points in the second half, although the Knights picked up nine points on 3-point attempts in that time.
Mary Kolar and Michelle Kelley each scored 10 points for the Knights.
In the A-3 championship game, senior Jenny Jemmett and junior Melissa McCoy each chipped in 10 points to lead West Jefferson to a 44-42 victory over Prairie.
In the third-place game, senior center Sheri Bingham scored a game-high 16 points and put back six rebounds to cruise past Declo 41-32.

Junior Mindy Saxton scored 15 points for Bear Lake, leading the Bears to a 61-45 triumph over Weiser and first place at the Idaho A-2 girls tournament at Nampa.
The Bears made it look easy as they rolled to a 36-18 halftime lead over the Wolverines. Weiser also struggled at the free-throw line, making only four points to Bear Lake’s 14.
In the third-place game, senior Alisha Haydon provided half of American Falls’ points as the Beavers outlasted Middleton 48-39.
Senior wing Carrie Williamson scored 10 points and Buhl connected on nine free throws in the second half, allowing the Indians to stroll to a 42-34 consolation crown over Sugar-Salem.

Heavily favored Troy lost out to Dietrich 42-39, which claimed the Idaho A-4 title at Kuna.
Dietrich had a more-balanced attack with seven players sharing the 42 points. Seniors Robin Southwick and Laura Anderson scored 12 and 10 points for the Blue Devils respectively.
Troy received most of its points from senior standout Lindy Kirkland, who threw in 18 for the Trojans.
Highland beat Greenleaf 56-50 for third place. Junior Molly Mae Mathesin put up 39 points for the Huskies to offset a 31-point showing by Greenleaf’s Jenny Binford.
Leadore edged Sho-Ban 38-31 for fourth place. Hagerman beat Shoshone 40-33 to take the consolation trophy.
