Committed to community service, Kate Baumann and Anne St. Hilaire earned their Girl Scout Silver Awards. Baumann coordinated the landscaping of a section of Washtucna City Park, while St. Hilaire led a day camp for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts. Both Cadet Scouts are working on their Gold Award.
FERRY COUNTY Curlew
Working for Phillip-Morris isn’t just a job for Pete Lentz - it’s an adventure. The 1976 Curlew High School grad has worked for 13 years for Kraft Foods, a subsidiary of Phillip-Morris. Recently, he accepted an appointment as the director of human resources for the company’s central Asia office in Kazakhstan. He will oversee 1,800 employees from eight countries.
GRANT COUNTY Grand Coulee
Community Services Clothing Bank volunteer Peggy Buis is moving to Tonasket. Volunteers say if nobody steps forward to take her place, the charity may close. More than 100 families have used the clothing bank since October. Anyone willing to help on a regular basis is asked to call (509) 633-3128.
LINCOLN COUNTY Sprague
Antiques were among the items recovered by Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies during a recent burglary arrest. A tip from a citizen led Deputy Matt Ruch and Deputy Mike Stauffer to a vehicle east of Sprague. Spokane residents Thomas Lawrence, 36, and Shane Oberst, 35, were arrested Feb. 1 on burglary and theft charges. A third suspect, Patrick Fitzgerald, 26, turned himself in with stolen property from a burglary the day before, police said.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Crescent Lake
The Sullivan Lake Ranger District is considering relocation of recreational facilities on Crescent Lake due to flooding. Three years of high waters are prompting rangers to move the lower day-use area and possibly the entire campground.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane
Mary Wilson has been named one of two honorary chairs of a fund-raising drive for a new Southside Senior Activity Center. Another co-chair is being sought.
Also joining the drive are Nila Hagood and Carole Zuppe, who will work to identify potential contributors for the $2 million campaign.
STEVENS COUNTY Kettle Falls
Lines are still being memorized for the Woodland Theatre’s spring musical “Brigadoon.” The Broadway classic features a mystical Scottish highlands village and a wedding. Love, of course, is the center of this timeless story. The curtain will go up March 5. Tickets for all performances are $10 for adults and $8 for those 18 and under. They’re available at Go West Books, The Book Depot and Kettle Falls Pharmacy.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
A series of free films on race, class and gender begins Tuesday at Washington State University at 7 p.m. in Wilson Hall, Room 6.
Tuesday’s film is “Daughters of the Dust,” a turn-of-the-century saga about a black family, descendants of slaves, living on the islands off the South Carolina Coast. On March 9, the featured film will be “Broken Blossoms,” a story of the friendship of a young woman and mysterious Chinese man. Each film will be followed by a discussion led by a member of the Department of Comparative American Cultures faculty.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
The churches of St.Sunday Maries will come together for a community worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the St. Maries High School gymnasium. The St. Maries Ministerial Association is sponsoring the service.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
Schweitzer Mountain Resort will host the Idaho Special Olympics Winter Games from Sunday through March 2. Athletes from Sandpoint, Priest River, Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, St. Maries and the Silver Valley will participate among 58 Idaho teams. Events include nordic, alpine and snowshoeing. Opening ceremonies will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bonner County Fairgrounds with competition March 1 and 2.

Free training for educators, volunteer leaders and home school teachers is available at 4-H Super Saturday at Bonners Ferry High School. Participants may attend one workshop or all day. Workshops will include new leader training, quilting, first aid and photography. KOOTENAI COUNTY Rathdrum
A public hearing on the city’s proposal to change the light fee for residents living in apartments will be March 9 at Rathdrum City Hall. The city’s proposal would change the light fee from a flat rate of $2 a month to $1.25 per dwelling unit per month. Single-family homes pay $1.25 a month. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
Idaho teachers are invited to attend a “Data-Driven Mathematics Workshop” Aug. 2-8 at the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus. The workshop is designed to complement middle and secondary school mathematics curricula and promotes hands-on activities that integrate data analysis into mathematics courses. The Osburn-Wallace PTO is selling tickets for its annual basket raffle. The raffle is the major fund-raiser for the organization, which works to enhance the school environment.

Fern Hanley has replaced Theresa Schneider as director of the Kootenai Volunteer Hospice. Schneider served as hospice director for 11 years. Under her leadership, the organization created the tree of life program, bereavement support groups and seminars, a newsletter and the volunteer appreciation dinner.
