Adams County Othello
Since moving to town in 1990, Conrad and April Caron have been involved in numerous community groups, and now have earned the title “Citizens of the Year” from the Chamber of Commerce. Conrad works for McCain Foods Inc. and April is a branch manager for Sterling Savings. Both say their employers make it easy to be involved in community activities.
Ferry County Republic
Thirty-four students at Republic High School - 13.5 percent of the student body - have perfect attendance, including seniors Ryan Rickard, Keith McCurdy, T.J. Dansel, Katy Strasser and Naomi Keilwitz.
Grant County Ephrata
The city of Ephrata is authorizing $1.25 million in bonds to build a new swimming pool by 2000. To finish it by that summer, bid specifications must be available by early April. Annual payments of $100,000 will come from existing city funds. The facility will include a pool and combination bathhouse and concession area.
Lincoln County Reardan
Calli McCain, a freshman member of Future Homemakers of America, is seeking toys for Emmanual Lutheran Day Care’s preschoolers. Dress-up clothes, doll accessories and learning games are sought, including “gently used” toys. To donate, take a heart off McCain’s “Gift from the Heart” poster and bring the toy to the high school office.
Pend Oreille County Newport
The Pend Oreille Players will perform Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate” this weekend. Notable songs include “Too Darn Hot” and “Another Opening, Another Show.” Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Sadie Halstead Middle School. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
Spokane County Deer Park
Morgan Dobson, a senior at Deer Park High School, was awarded a Seattle Pacific University Presidential Scholar Award, which includes a $22,000 scholarship. It honors students who display academic achievement and are active in their community. She’s a member of the National Honor Society and the school’s golf team.
Stevens County Colville
Colville police disarmed a youth who was brandishing a butcher knife last week, authorities said. Police said they were called after the boy fled his home after he was injured with the weapon during a fight. Officers said the boy lunged at an officer when he was ordered to drop the knife. He allegedly threw the knife at the officer and ran. He was tackled and taken into custody.
Whitman County Pullman
The city of Pullman is preparing its new $280,000 fire engine for service this spring. The custombuilt vehicle has an extended cab, scene lighting and a 400-horsepower engine. It can carry 500 gallons of water and 40 gallons of fire-retardant foam, and replaces a 1970 fire truck.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has placed Benewah County on probation for not enforcing its flood plain ordinance. As a result, homeowners will pay a $50 surcharge on insurance policies, and FEMA could eliminate the county from the federal flood insurance program. The probation comes less than two years after the county was moved off probation by FEMA.
Bonner County Priest River
Trustees for the newly formed School District No. 83 are seeking public input through weekly workshops to help plan the operations of the West Bonner County School District. The workshops will be Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Priest River Lamanna High School, except on the second Wednesday of each month, which is the school board’s regular meeting.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Kootenai Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever will hold a fundraising banquet at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the American Legion Hall. The event will include a no-host bar, games and raffles. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Eileen Thomas of Spokane’s Human Rights Commission will speak at North Idaho College at 10 a.m. Friday about justice and equality as part of Black History Month.
Latah County Moscow
The University of Idaho-Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival’s Jazz in the Schools program, now in its fourth year, will visit elementary schools Wednesday through Friday in Lewiston, Clarkston, Pullman, Moscow, Genesee, Lapwai and Spokane. Performances are also scheduled for home schoolers and elementary students in the Whitepine School District. Lionel Hampton will perform at Lapwai Elementary School at 1 p.m. Friday.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The Kellogg School Board has adopted action plans for eight goals, which deal with behavior management, academic accountability, core curriculum subjects and district finances. It also created a plan for maintenance to school buildings and grounds.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
The county will rehire a temporary telephone operator for its automated switchboard. The employee will answer the phone, but the switchboard will take over when the employee is busy. Callers are advised to check the phone book for the extension of the office they are trying to reach.
