Tincan Reassures Childhood Programs

From Staff

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Thursday, February 25, 1999): Correction Programs not running yet: Eastern Washington University is planning Early Head Start programs in Newport, Republic, Colville, Kettle Falls, Metaline Falls and Loon Lake. A story in Wednesday ‘s newspaper indicated the programs were already operating.

Three north county early childhood education programs will not be affected by changes at Eastern Washington University’s TINCAN network, an official said.

Ruth Galm, Eastern’s director of grant and research development, said in a statement that residents had expressed concerns about the future of the programs after Eastern notified users of The Inland Northwest Community Access Network, or TINCAN, that it will close the computer network unless a nonprofit organization steps forward to take over.

Both TINCAN and the education programs are funded with grants obtained through Eastern’s Center for Technology, Education and the Community.

The three programs are Early Head Start, Regional Collaboration for Excellence in Child Care, and Therapeutic Child Care/Development. The programs operate at several sites, including Newport, Republic, Colville, Kettle Falls, Metaline Falls and Loon Lake.
