Sauer Outdoes Herself In Opener

Carey Sauer has played long enough to pile up 1,550 points, but never scored as many in one game as she did on Friday.
Sauer scored 24 in the first half, made 9 of 11 from the free-throw line and finished with 37 points, as 10th-ranked Newport opened Great Northern League play with a 68-44 victory over visiting Riverside.
Sauer’s previous high game was 36, in a winner-to-state game during her freshman season. Newport is 60-17 in Sauer’s four years.
Sauer and fellow senior Mary Lindburg added 12 rebounds apiece.
