WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The local police department has another officer on the beat. John Bartz, 27, has donned Ritzville blues, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Bartz, who started as a reserve officer a year ago, credits his former employers at Coast to Coast for arranging his schedule so he could start his law enforcement career.

Ferry County Curlew

Lake The Ferry County Assessor’s Office is revaluing property in the northeastern portion of the county. Residents in Torboy, Pine Grove, Lambert, Herron, Trout, Barrett Creek, Cooke Mountain, Storm King and Walker Hill will receive revaluation notices this summer.

Grant County Moses Lake

Local retailers reported a healthy holiday buying season. While the Sears store reports sales equal with last Christmas, which was “a very good year,” many specialty shops reported booming sales of clothing and other practical gifts. Returns, they said, were down.

Lincoln County Almira

The Almira Lions Club will hold its annual winter blood drive Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the local community center. Blood donations may be added to the Almira account at Inland Northwest Blood Center or designated to an individual or family member.

Pend Oreille County Ione

Local cancer patient Carol Park is recuperating at home, thankful for her neighbors. Park spent several days in Seattle having seed-sized radioactive pellets implanted in her cancerous right eye. Seattle City Light employees in Ione purchased her plane tickets and found Seattle-based employees to provide transportation during treatment.

Spokane County Deer Park

The Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations until March 1 for its 1999 Citizen of the Year Award to be presented at its annual banquet in April. Applications must include the person nominated, the reason for the nomination and the nominating person or organization. Nominations should be sent to Deer Park Area Chamber of Commerce; P.O. Box 518, Deer Park, WA 99006. Nominations may also be faxed to 279-5900.

Stevens County Colville

Hoping to give Pinewood Terrace Nursing Center residents a more homey atmosphere, administrators have brought in Sparky, a 2-year-old Sheltie, to brighten things up. A stray rescued and retrained by Dog Patch, Sparky is a calm and trustworthy dog - just right for her new home. She joins a cat and a bird on the nursing center staff.

Whitman County Pullman

Sunnyside Elementary School parent volunteer Tom Fletcher of Pullman was honored with the Superintendent’s Contribution Award for December. The awards are given out monthly to dedicated volunteers in the Pullman School District.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Juanita Lundt retired from the office of Benewah County treasurer this week after 27 years of service. Lundt worked as an assistant bookkeeper for seven years until replacing May Stouffer as county treasurer in 1978. She also served as public administrator during her 20-year tenure. Lundt is a lifelong resident of the St. Maries area.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Bonner County commissioners are waiting to make a decision on Sandpoint Airport’s courtesy car program until the new board is sworn in later this month. Last month, Whitetail Transportation asked the county to eliminate the program. The Sandpoint Airport Advisory Board has voted unanimously to recommend that commissioners keep the program.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Family Children’s Carnival will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairgrounds Memorial Hall. The event is hosted by the Boundary County Library and the Head Start Learning Center. Admission, dinner and prizes are free for children with “Chill Out and Read” bookmarks stamped five times at the library. Children earn stamps by reading books.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Local business representatives will speak at a career summit from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Coeur d’Alene High School. The summit is for students interested in careers in business management or anyone seeking a career change or information about a certain industry. The summit is sponsored by the chambers of commerce in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene and the Kootenai Business Education Partnership. For information, call (208) 762-4250.

Latah County Moscow

Fifty bird carcasses were dumped illegally on North Polk Extension last week. All of the animals were shot legally with the breast meat taken. Evidence found by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game implicates three individuals who have not yet been contacted. Littering carcasses is a misdemeanor offense with a maximum fine of $300 and six months in jail.

Shoshone County Kellogg

The number of accidents investigated by the Kellogg Police Department involving cars and people from January to November 1998 was 48, similar to the previous year’s total. The traffic/safety committee will discuss the issue at the Jan. 25 meeting. The committee makes recommendations to the City Council brought by citizens concerning parking, speeding or other traffic issues.

MONTANA

Lincoln County Libby

The Montana Athletic Club will be offering free seminars next week. A course in yoga will be given Monday, while a stress reduction seminar will be offered Tuesday and Wednesday. A six-week, one-hour integrative yoga therapy class will be offered Tuesdays beginning Jan. 19 at 6:55 p.m. for $30. Classes in ballroom dancing, fly fishing and defense will be held in the future.
