Going For The Silver
Hillary Rodham Clinton received a commemorative Dolley Madison silver dollar in a White House ceremony Monday, amid glowing comparisons that placed her alongside President Madison’s wife as a trailblazing first lady. She held up the shining coin while standing before the famous painting of George Washington that Dolley Madison rescued just before British troops descended on the White House and burned it down in 1814. Dolley Madison, was the first presidential wife to carry the title “first lady.” The coin, authorized by Congress in October 1996, was designed by Tiffany & Co. to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Madison’s death.
