Kaiser Contract Talks Termed ‘Substantive’

From Staff

The news from Chicago is that Kaiser and the Steelworkers Union are still talking.

Tuesday saw a second day of “substantive” discussions of the company’s Dec. 17 proposal for a contract and production improvements, according to Kaiser. The two days of negotiations this week are the most real bargaining the parties have done since the strike that idled more than 2,100 workers in the Spokane area began Sept. 30.

The meetings, scheduled to continue through today, have mostly focused on discussion and clarification of the company’s proposal, said Susan Ashe, spokeswoman for the company.

The full bargaining teams, including the presidents from the Mead and Trentwood plants’ local union halls, have been at the talks.

The sides are meeting with the help of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
