Washington Issues Gold Mine Certification

From Staff

Washington state has issued water quality certification for the proposed Battle Mountain Gold mine in Okanogan County, moving the mine one step closer to construction.

The Department of Ecology’s issuance of the permit drew criticism from the Okanogan Highlands Alliance. Water quality in the area will be impaired if the open pit mine is built, alliance director David Kliegman said in a statement.

Mine officials dispute that, saying that water from the project will meet state standards.

The mine is a joint-venture between Crown Resources and Battle Mountain Gold. The companies hope to begin mine construction in spring 2000.
