Ten years ago: Three days of rioting erupted in Miami when a police officer fatally shot a black motorcyclist, causing a crash that also claimed the life of a passenger.

Five years ago: President Clinton held marathon talks in Geneva with Syrian President Hafez Assad, who offered Israel “normal, peaceful relations” in exchange for land. In Moscow, Yegor Gaidar, first deputy prime minister and architect of Russia’s market reforms, announced his resignation.

One year ago: NASA officially announced that John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, would fly aboard the space shuttle later in the year. The tobacco industry reached a $15.3 billion settlement with the state of Texas.
