Miami Cracks Top 25
The Miami Hurricanes cracked the AP men’s basketball poll at No. 25, the school’s first appearance since 1960.
Things remained the same at the top, with Connecticut at No. 1 for the eighth straight week and Duke a solid No. 2 for the sixth week in a row.
Connecticut received 53 first-place votes and 1,755 points from the national media panel.
Duke had 1,721 points, 134 more than Stanford, which moved up one spot to No. 3 following road wins over Southern California and UCLA.
Maryland also moved up one place to fourth, while Cincinnati, which lost for the first time this season last week at North Carolina Charlotte, dropped two spots to No. 5.
Auburn, along with Connecticut the only unbeaten teams in Division I, jumped from eighth to sixth, and was followed in the Top Ten by Kentucky, St. John’s, Arizona and North Carolina. UCLA dropped to 13th.
Gonzaga University jumped two spots to No. 26 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.
Tennessee stood alone among teams that have been No. 1 in the AP women’s basketball poll.
Tennessee held the top spot for the second straight week and the 84th time overall, breaking a tie with Louisiana Tech for the most appearances at No. 1.
Oregon has won nine of its last 10 to make the Top 25 for the first time since Jan. 24, 1995.
Oregon’s Shaquala Williams and Todd MacCulloch of Washington were named the Pac-10 Conference women’s and men’s players of the week.
Williams averaged 19.5 points, 6 rebounds and 5.5 assists last week in a pair of wins.
MacCulloch was named the conference’s top men’s player by averaging 23.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games.
