Ewu’S Winter Enrollment Up

From Staff

Freshman and graduate students continue to boost enrollment at Eastern Washington University, which Tuesday reported a 3.5 percent increase in the number of winter quarter students.

The gain is important to Eastern’s financial and political future as Olympia lawmakers meet this spring to approve higher education budgets and policies for the next two years.

As of Jan. 15, the 10th day of winter quarter, a total of 7,429 students were enrolled for classes at the main campus in Cheney, downtown Spokane and elsewhere. Enrollment was 252 higher than last winter, but down from 7,688 students in the fall. Enrollment typically shrinks after fall quarter.

The number of full-time equivalent students, a measurement used by the state to fund state schools, was 7,173, up 285, or 4 percent, from 6,888 a year ago.

Gov. Gary Locke is seeking to continue funding Eastern for 7,739 full-time equivalent students.
