Othello

Othello Community Hospital welcomes a new member to its board of directors. The Rev. Bruce Meier was selected from eight candidates to fill the vacant board seat. Meier leads the Paradise Lutheran Church and has a lot of experience with volunteer and community groups.

Ferry County

Republic

The Curlew Lake Recreation Association, formerly the Curlew Lake Association, will meet Saturday at 1 p.m. in Kiwanis Hall to discuss lake needs. Anyone who uses the lake or relies on tourism dollars is invited.

Grant County

Volunteer firefighter Rodney Bise has earned the title Volunteer of the Year. Bise, who moonlights as Santa, loves to help children. He has been involved in Little League and helped the Rotary Club with projects, although he’s not a Rotarian.

Staff and students of Davenport High School have said farewell to longtime business teacher Joyce Stubbs. Stubbs, at DHS for more than 27 years, retired Dec. 31 for health reasons. Stubbs is a Davenport native and studied business and education at WSU. She implemented the Future Business Leaders of America chapter at DHS.

Pend Oreille County

Sophomore Misty Haney was recently chosen as Selkirk High School’s delegate to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference this spring in Spokane.

Deer Park

Deer Park’s Lisa Rooney and Colbert’s Andrianne Golly and Juli Pritchard were recently accepted into the WSU Honors College. It promotes greater understanding of the artistic, natural and cultural world while supplementing more specialized training in the students’ majors.

Stevens County

Colville

The Colville High School jazz band will perform Saturday. Local musicians Ken Luker and Gary Killings will join the students. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $8.

Whitman County

Pine City

The Pine City Stone Church will get a new lease on life soon. The local Historical Society will replace the cedar-shake roof this summer at an estimated cost of $12,000, and donations are being sought. The church is the oldest building in Pine City.

IDAHO

Benewah County

Plummer

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe will present the county a fully equipped, $26,000 patrol car in a ceremony at noon today in front of tribal headquarters in Plummer. Chairman Ernie Stensgar, members of the tribal council, tribal police and staff will join Benewah County Sheriff Joe Blackburn and the Benewah County Commission in the presentation. The county’s use of the car and the expanded patrol time will benefit law enforcement and public safety for Indian and non-Indian people in western Benewah County.

Journalist David Halberstam will present a public lecture at the University of Idaho at 4:30 p.m. April 8 in the Student Union Building Ballroom. Titled “The Children: How the Unique Courage and Faith of Ordinary People Changed America,” the lecture is sponsored by the UI College of Law and its Bellwood Lecture program.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

Kellogg School Board trustees voted Monday to postpone starting a high school baseball and softball program until spring 2000. The board approved beginning the program next year, if no district funds are used. Fund-raising efforts by the parent-supported program fell short of the money needed to start up this spring.

Libby

A Rotary International $25,000 grant to the Libby school system will fund a part-time nurse to provide screenings and health education for children. The nurse will supplement the Libby School District’s nurse, who travels between schools. The grant will also assist uninsured children who have serious medical conditions detected by the nurse. This is the second grant awarded to Montana; the first went to Helena.
