Tewksbury Retires

At Concord, N.H., pitcher Bob Tewksbury tearfully announced his retirement, ending a 13-year major league career.

Tewksbury said he had an offer to play in Montreal but decided his desire to be with his family was greater than his desire to play.

The right-hander was 110-102 in 13 seasons with the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins.

One of the top control pitchers in baseball, Tewksbury walked only 202 batters in 1,807 career innings.

Leslie Ann Leary, a former Houston Astros executive, is suing the team for $300,000, alleging it refused to promote her and fired her because she is a woman.

The suit alleges the Astros fired her in late 1997 from her position as assistant to the club’s director of player development, telling her the position was being eliminated.

The Astros then hired a less-qualified man, who was given a job with a different title but the same duties, the lawsuit says.
