ADAMS COUNTY Othello
Othello Police have suspects in custody for passing counterfeit money in town recently. Two raids at local homes turned up counterfeit $20, $50 and $100 bills. The $20 bills were copies of old currency, while $50 and $100 bills were new-design issues. The fake currency was made on a copy machine. Police warn that the paper feels different than genuine currency.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
Students at Republic High School are honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by dedicating two weeks to changing their own lives. Kids in grades 7-12 will be performing acts of kindness and justice throughout the end of the month. The students plan to act with compassion and fairness, and work to make their school and community a better place.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
The annual Christmas Bird Count showed a drop in population since last year. Volunteers logged 70 different species in the 15-mile Cascade Park area. Over 113,000 birds were counted overall, lower than the final tally of 123,955 in 1997. Bald eagles and black-crown night herons were among the species sighted.
LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport
Student leaders are asking for public input on the newly enforced closed campus policy. Davenport school officials recently began enforcing the rule, which had been a policy for many years, due to liability concerns. The students hope to bring revisions to Tuesday’s 26 school board meeting.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
The Newport Miner and Gem State Miner newspaper contest for the first baby of the New Year was won by Justin Ray Weber. Justin, the first bundle of joy of 1999, was born at 5:47 p.m. on Jan. 1. Nearly 21 days premature, he was admitted to Sacred Heart Medical Center until his weight increases. Parents are Tina and Charles Weber Jr. of Oldtown, Idaho. He is their first child.
SPOKANE COUNTY Cheney
Eastern Washington University is holding a winter play day on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Pence Union Building’s multipurpose room. The event includes games and performances, and is open to the community.
STEVENS COUNTY Colville
The Stevens County Jail is a crowded place. With crime on the rise, the jail is often full, forcing the county to pay other counties to house offenders. In 1998, over $78,000 was spent to keep Stevens County prisoners behind bars in other jurisdictions. Officials say 1999 figures could be over $100,000.
WHITMAN COUNTY LaCrosse
Local musicians Ali Brown, Nicole Schneider, Rachel Chastain and Mindy Rumiser recently performed with the Eastern Washington University Honor Chorus. The girls, part of the LaCrosse High School concert choir, joined 170 other high school girls in the vocal effort.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
Richard Schumaker has been appointed by county commissioners to the board of directors at Benewah Community Hospital. Schumaker fills the vacancy created when Gary Moss resigned. Kurt Huffman, Lakeside High School principal, was reappointed to the board.

The Eagles Aerie and the Sportsman Club will host a benefit pool and dart tournament Sunday to benefit the Order of Eagles Max Baer Heart Fund. The fund is used for research in the fight against heart disease and diabetes. Entry fee for either contest is $5. The University of Idaho County Extension Program is sponsoring a gardening course for persons who intend to use their land to start a small business. Topics will include evaluating goals and lifestyle, budgeting and financing, product production and marketing options. The 14-week course will be Tuesdays, Jan. 26-April 27 from 6-9 p.m.
LATAH COUNTY Moscow
Members of the Appaloosa Lace Guild will bring their traditional forms of lace-making skills to the McConnell Mansion’s Victorian parlors this Saturday, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and 13.
Visitors are invited to watch and talk with lace guild members as they demonstrate the art of tatting, bobbin lace and Battenberg lace. The 21-member guild formed in 1993 and shares its skills every Saturday afternoon before Valentine’s Day in the mansion’s turn-of-the-century parlors. The museum store, featuring Valentines, gifts and books, will be open each of the afternoons. The McConnell Mansion, located at 110 S. Adams, is open 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
SHOSHONE COUNTY Wallace
Wallace High School was evacuated for a short time Tuesday after a bomb threat was called in just before the students were to begin their lunch period. Officers from the Wallace Police Department, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office and Shoshone County Fire District 1 searched the building. No bomb was found. Students were moved to the Wallace Elementary School. The search was completed at about 2:30 p.m.

Candidates for three seats on the Libby Parks District board have until Friday to file for a place on the April 6 school election ballot.
