Adams County Ritzville
The county’s jobless rate jumped a bit from September to October. In September, 6.1 percent of eligible workers were looking for work. By October, 6.5 percent of workers were unemployed.
Ferry County Republic
Local residents are rooting for Rep. Cathy McMorris, R-Colville, to win her fight to fund community fairs. McMorris is sponsoring the Fair Funding Act, which would dedicate a portion of existing state hotel/motel tax funds to 72 fairs statewide.
Grant County Moses Lake
The Grant County sheriff is cracking down on teenage drinking. In a recent sweep, deputies arrested 20 minors at two Moses Lake parties. All 20 were cited with minor in possession/consumption.
Lincoln County Harrington
The downtown revitalization project is $6,000 short of its goal. The Harrington 2000+ Committee, which seeks to revitalize the turnof-the-century brick town with new sidewalks and lampposts, is asking for donations. Donors giving $500 or more will get their names on a lamppost plaque.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Former Newport School Board member Jim Brewster was chosen to take over Chuck Avey’s term as a director. Avey, a six-year board veteran, retired in December. Brewster, who spent eight previous years on the school board, was one of two residents who filed for the appointment.
Spokane County Millwood
A home-schooling fair will be conducted Feb. 3-6 at the Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Registration forms must be postmarked by Monday. For more information, call (509) 891-1370.
Stevens County Kettle Falls
The city is concerned about illegal snow shoveling. City crews recently noticed residents piling snow from driveways on the sidewalks or plowing it into streets. Both acts are illegal. The city used to plow sidewalks, but will discontinue the service if landowners pile shoveled snow on them.
Whitman County Pullman
Though she never attended Washington State University, Tacoma businesswoman Bea Kent announced plans to leave $1.3 million to WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. An animal lover, Kent owns a mobile home park in Tacoma that specializes in senior citizen residents, especially those with pets.
IDAHO
Benewah County Plummer
The deadline to comment on the request for a $44,500 grant to build a boardwalk at Heyburn State Park is Feb. 2. The grant would provide most of the estimated $50,000 cost to build a floating boardwalk in the Plummer Creek Marsh Interpretive Area. Bonner County Sandpoint
Predator Project, a Bozeman, Mont., conservation group, will host the 1998 International Wildlife Film Festival tonight at the Panida Theater. Five films will be shown beginning at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children at Java Adagio or Eve’s Leaves, or $7 at the door.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The 55-Alive mature drivers class will be in Bonners Ferry on Monday and Tuesday. Classes are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center. The class will show drivers 50 and older how age affects their driving. The class fee is $8. Call (208) 267-7269 to register.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Former Coeur d’Alene mayor Ray Stone will share his World War II experiences at 7 p.m. tonight at the Coeur d’Alene Cultural Center. Stone was part of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment. For information, call (208) 664-3177.
Latah County Moscow
Two Moscow residents were awarded the Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Award from the Latah County Human Rights Task Force on Jan. 16. Mannan Scheikh, an Islamic leader, was honored for his work with United Way and other community activities. Leethia Botello, a University of Idaho student, was honored for her work with the Hispanic community and dedication to see minority high school students succeed. The student award is given to a person destined to make an impact on human rights.
Shoshone County Pinehurst
Eileen Deutsch will be featured at Pinehurst Elementary School Jan. 25-Feb. 5 as an artist-in-residence. The Parent Teacher Association received $1,199 from the Idaho Commission on the Arts for the event. Students will work with Deutsch on paintings and display their work at an open house.
Wallace
The Wallace Youth Center is open for business at its new location next to Wallace City Hall. Youth center hours will be 3:30-8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Lincoln County Troy
Troy School Board trustees agreed Jan. 12 to endorse a movement to swap high school girls’ basketball and volleyball seasons. Montana is one of only a few states that schedules girls’ basketball in the fall and volleyball in the winter.
