Cheney Stuns Coeur D’Alene
Border girls basketball
The Cheney High girls basketball team almost let a seven-point lead slip away.
But senior Kara Weitman saved the Blackhawks with a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Cheney upset Coeur d’Alene 47-46 in a Border League game Friday night at Cheney.
Coeur d’Alene entered the game tied for first place with Moscow, which defeated Sandpoint and gained sole possession.
Cheney led by seven with 50 seconds left, but CdA’s Shaylia Davis made a three-point play and Dani Bileck followed with a steal and layin to cut the Blackhawks’ lead to two. Then Bileck scored again to put the Vikings ahead 46-45, their first lead of the game.
However, Weitman dribbled the length of the floor and hit the game-winning shot. She scored 12 points.
Cheney’s Tanya Birchler added 11 points and KDee Anderson had eight points and eight steals.
