Arceneaux Carries Weber Past Eastern

It wasn’t nearly as thrilling and it didn’t take nearly as long, but the outcome of Wednesday’s men’s basketball rematch between Eastern Washington and Weber State was the same as the season’s first meeting between the Big Sky Conference schools.

Weber’s Wildcats again beat the Eagles, this time 97-82 in just 40 minutes of play. The last time the teams met, at Eastern’s Reese Court, the Wildcats escaped with a 101-100 victory that took four overtimes to decide.

But this time, in front of a friendly crowd of 4,622, Weber’s Harold Arceneaux made sure things were settled in regulation by throwing in 39 points, a Dees Events Center record.

The junior transfer made 14 of 18 shots from the field, including 2 of 4 3-pointers, and was 9 of 12 from the foul line. He also had six rebounds and blocked four shots.

“Arceneaux had a great game,” EWU coach Steve Aggers said after watching his Eagles slip to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in the Big Sky. “He did a little bit of everything and showed his great versatility. He hurt us outside with some 3s in the second half, and if he didn’t score, he made some great assists.”

The win was the 12th in as many games for the Wildcats (16-6, 7-2 Big Sky), who have never lost to the Eagles in Ogden.

Eddie Gill, another junior transfer, scored 22 points and dished out seven assists for Weber. He also held EWU’s all-conference point guard, Deon Williams, to two points and three assists.

Eastern was paced offensively by Shannon Taylor, who finished with 23 points. Tony McGee added 11.

“They were quicker to the ball and more aggressive,” Aggers said of his team’s rebounding woes. “You add Arceneaux’s hot night offensively and our bad rebounding and that’s the difference.”

Eastern lost Will Levy when he was ejected for a flagrant foul with just over 5 minutes left in the game.
