WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Othello

Residents and a handful of government agencies are mulling options for Rodeo Lake’s transformation into a park. Options include a park and recreational facility, an open pristine area, or a scaled-down version of the recreation park.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

Families should mark April on their calendars as Ferry County Pride Month. During that time, volunteers will put on a spring conservation fair and plant sale and a roadside cleanup day. Volunteers are needed to help with annual events, as well as propose new family-oriented events.

GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake

Grant County International Airport has a new control tower. The tower was dedicated Jan. 12 and includes a new terminal radar-approach control facility. The tower, part of the FAA’s nationwide modernization program, is located just north of the new passenger terminal building, which was built by the Port of Moses Lake.

LINCOLN COUNTY Harrington

The local U.S. Bank branch took to heart the financial need of the Harrington 2000+ Downtown Revitalization project. A check for $1,000 was recently donated to help give this turn-of-the-century brick town a face lift. Citizens hope to jazz up the business strip with new sidewalks and vintage looking lampposts.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Sacheen Lake

Firefighters are prepared for an ice emergency. More than 12 people participated in a mock ice rescue Jan. 16 during which firefighters used their new ice rescue sled. The $3,500 sled was purchased with donations.

SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park

Emily Barrentine, daughter of Wayne and Marianne Barrentine of Deer Park, was recently named the Deer Park Rotary Club’s January student of the month. A Deer Park High School senior, Barrentine is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity soccer team and jazz and pep bands.

STEVENS COUNTY Colville

The water/sewer department accounts for nearly half of the city of Colville’s annual budget, says Mayor Duane Scott. The 1999 budget, says Scott, is significantly less than last year’s, with belt-tightening in every department. Streets consume 10.7 percent of the city budget, with $1,131,244 slated for upkeep and repairs.

WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman

Community Free University has announced its spring semester offerings. Catalogues providing details on these noncredit classes are being distributed to Pullman and Moscow public libraries. Registration is free, though some classes have material fees. The two new classes are Falun Gong (Buddhist meditation) and Women in Early Christianity. BENEWAH COUNTY Fernwood

The public will vote for three water and sewer board positions Tuesday. Polls will be open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. in the CAF Building in Fernwood. Voters must be 18 years old, a resident of Fernwood for 30 days and a registered voter. Petitions for candidacy have been filed by Bill Florin, Orville Boller, Doreen McCall, Clinton Green, George Harvey and Sheryl Sullivan. Petitions for write-in candidacy have been filed by Sharon Hyde and Gidget McQueen.

BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint

Northwest Physical Therapy, a division of Bonner General Hospital, is moving out of its location on Ontario Street to the new wing of the hospital. The rehab team offers services in physical, occupational and speech therapy.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

Lake City Insurance is suing former agent Janet Jesberger and her new employer for allegedly luring customers away. In a lawsuit filed this week, the company claimed that Jesberger violated a nonpiracy and nondisclosure contract by recruiting or accepting business from Lake City’s customers for Callahan Insurance Agency. Lake City Insurance seeks more than $70,000 in damages and $3,000 in attorney fees.

LATAH COUNTY Moscow

Yaron Svaroy, an American journalist who infiltrated the neo-Nazi movements in the United States, Europe and Germany, will speak at the University of Idaho Student Union Ballroom Feb. 3 at 8 p.m.

Svaroy wrote “In Hitler’s Shadow,” a book about his experiences, and also produced an HBO documentary about the infiltrations. His talk is free and open to the public.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation grant to purchase two ATVs to help enforce rules and regulations on the county’s ATV, hiking and biking trails. The ATVs would cost $9,694, and the sheriff is asking $7,270.50 from the parks department. The balance would come from the sheriff’s budget.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Fishing guide Dave Blackburn will teach a six-week fly-fishing class beginning Monday at the Montana Athletic Club. The class will meet 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays. Sponsored by the Montana Athletic Club and Kootenai Angler, the course will cover the basics of fly fishing including equipment, fly tying and an on-stream instruction of how to read water and basic entomology.
