Dedication At Park Planned Today Rite At Fish Lake Will Note Recent Improvements To Upgrade Safety, Accessibility

The weatherman is calling for summer temperatures at Fish Lake County Park today for the dedication of improvements added in recent months.

Members of the public are invited to the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the park. Refreshments will be served.

The Spokane County Parks Advisory Board is sponsoring the dedication after the county spent nearly $250,000 on the park.

Today, the park is safer and more accessible than it was just a year ago.

A new boardwalk was installed to connect the parking area with new play equipment and handicap-accessible docks.

The boat launch was moved from the swimming beach to a new site just off the Cheney-Spokane Road. That has eliminated the hazard of having vehicles with boats and trailers backing through the swimming area.

The Spokane Walleye Club donated a handicap-accessible fishing dock located south of the swimming area.

New sand was spread along the beach for more comfortable sunbathing.

Much of the construction work was done under contract with the Spokane Service Team, a government youth-employment program supervised by Educational Service District 101.

Also, the park is connected to a 2-year-old paved trail that runs southwest to Cheney on old railroad right of way.

Park improvements have been a longtime goal of the Marshall Community Coalition, a group of neighborhood advocates in the area.

The property was formerly a private resort that the county purchased in 1991.
