Youth Cited For Burning

A 16-year-old boy was cited for reckless burning after he set off fireworks and ignited a fire Monday evening.

A Spokane police officer saw the boy standing near the burning grass at Post and Gordon at 6:30 p.m. The boy ran but returned to the scene to try and fight the fire, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Meanwhile, neighbors on Glass were using garden hoses to try to douse the fire, he said.

A fire truck responded, and with the help of neighbors and police using fire extinguishers, doused the small blaze.

There was no property damage.

In another fireworks related incident, Spokane police cited a man Sunday night for shooting off fireworks, one of which landed on the roof of a neighbor’s house.

The officer saw the man shooting off fireworks at his home at 2223 W. Dean. Andren C. Scheldt, 29, was cited and the officer took the fireworks, Cottam said.

Police said wet weather contributed to fewer fireworks complaints this year.

The house suffered no damage.

Man arrested for domestic violence

Police say a drunken man trashed his and his wife’s apartment after becoming angry Sunday morning. Daniel L. Gaines, 45, was booked into jail for first-degree domestic violence, Cottam said.

Police arrived at 2928 E. Diamond and found the man had overturned a stove, broken a television and windows and put a hole in the living room wall, he said.

Neither Gaines’ wife nor her 12-year-old daughter were injured.

Man arrested again

Police arrested 20-year-old Adama R. Walton, this time for first-degree robbery. Court records show Walton has been arrested at least six times in the last three years by Spokane police.

After being handcuffed at 2211 W. Broadway on Friday night, Walton ran from the arresting officer and sprinted into a house at 2021 W. College, Cottam said.

He came out of the house after a few minutes and was booked into jail for robbery and second-degree escape, he said.
