WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

Adams County has qualified for a portion of $7.5 million in state grants to fight drug and alcohol abuse. It’s unknown how much money the county will receive, but it will most likely go to a Boys and Girls Club.

FERRY COUNTY

The county is hoping for a $110,560 grant for a Family Support Program, but is still discussing indirect administrative costs of running the program. No administrative funds were requested when the grant was applied for through Prevention/AmeriCorps.

GRANT COUNTY

Ephrate

The city pool will not be open by the summer of 2000. Construction bids exceeded available funding by more than $400,000, so the city is taking more time to raise funds. The city has $1.5 million set aside for the project, which includes a diving area, a water slide built into the adjacent hillside and a bathhouse/concession stand. The city currently has no pool.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Odessa

Kyle Strohmaier recently placed fourth in the 16 and under age group of the Pacific Northwest Junior Golf Championships in Yakima. Strohmaier shot a 77. His placing qualified him for the National Junior Golf Championship in Cleveland next month.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Sacheen Lake

Area singers, dancers and musicians participated in the finals of the Circle Moon Talent Show. Ricky Reneer, a recent Newport High graduate, took top honors for his vocal solo “Love Changes Everything.” Placing second was Diamond Lake singer Carolyn Cameron. The top three winners received cash prizes.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Spokane

Gregg Jones of Gregg Jones & Associates real estate firm is heading up the community gifts portion of a $2 million fund drive for a new Southside Senior Activity Center.

STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

Local churches are getting together for an old-fashioned tent revival July 15-31 at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds. Local gospel musicians will be on hand, as will a host of pastors and special speakers. Services begin at 7 p.m. nightly.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Colfax

A citywide yard sale to kick off the annual Colfax Concrete River Festival will continue downtown today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To obtain free table space call (509) 397-3458. Today’s event’s include a noon parade and a Chamber of Commerce auction of 55 donated items. On Sunday, a golf tournament begins at 9 a.m.

IDAHO

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

Thirty-nine vendors, 18 of which are in Benewah County, have been paid at least $2,500 by the city of St. Maries for goods or services in the first eight months of the fiscal year. Garbage disposal was the largest single expense for the city, with $79,000 to St. Maries Waste Management to collect and $54,500 to the county for disposal of trash.

BONNER COUNTY

Sandpoint

The Northwest Sessions regional amateur wakeboard series competition will be in Sandpoint today. The event will be held north of Sandpoint City Beach on Lake Pend Oreille. Registration fee is $35 and the field is limited to 80 participants. The competition will be a free-riding format.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

Coeur d’Alene

The Art Spirit Gallery will promote art in downtown Coeur d’Alene July 17 with “Art in the Making.” Twelve Inland Northwest artists will sculpt, draw and paint from two live models in the Plaza Shops from 1 to 4 p.m. For information, call Steve Gibbs at (208) 765-6006.

Faculty and alumni of Logos School will perform “Leave It To Psmith” today and Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The P.G. Wodehouse play is about two young aristocratic British men in the 1930s and how they trick their way into getting riches and love.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Mullan

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has proposed closing the Hale Fish Hatchery because of a lack of funding. The hatchery receives $20,000 a year from the department, and additional funding from Shoshone County and the Shoshone County Sportsmen’s Association. It attracts local and out-of-town visitors, including children from local schools and from the Spokane area. The hatchery opened in 1939 with production of about one million fish.

MONTANA

LINCOLN COUNTY

Libby

Libby’s water filtration system will be shut down July 19 through late September while a contractor repairs defective paint. The wrong type of paint was used for the humid environment of the plant and wouldn’t stick. The paint will be stripped off and replaced with the proper type. During the work, water will be treated with chlorine. The city will monitor the unfiltered water for residual chlorine, turbidity and bacteriological samples while the system is bypassed.
