Water, Sewer Project Receives Approval

From Staff

An $890,907 water and sewer system construction project for this Spokane Reservation community got the go-ahead Monday when the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it will provide much of the money.

The improvements will end a growth moratorium for the community and ease environmental concerns caused by the current overloaded water and sewer systems. Capacity will be increased from the current 185 users to 260 residential and commercial customers.

Officials said the Department of Agriculture will provide $284,000 in cash and a $223,500 loan. The Indian Health Service will contribute $308,400 in cash and $75,000 worth of engineering services.

The work will include installation of new water and sewer mains and lateral lines, three water reservoirs and a water-treatment building.

About 500 of 996 Spokane tribal members live in Wellpinit.
