Othello
Othello residents said no to more traffic through town. A proposal to connect State Highway 26 with Seventh Street met with opposition at a recent City Council meeting. The city hopes to relieve congestion at the intersection of First Street by rerouting some traffic to Seventh. There are two schools, eight churches and many homes on Seventh.
Ferry County Republic
County children will be in the spotlight this weekend. The Missoula Children’s Theatre is in town to present “The Pied Piper.” Nearly 50 local children auditioned for parts on Monday, and have rehearsed all week for the Saturday performance.
Grant County Moses Lake
Any day now, Grant County International Airport will be finished.
Construction crews have been finishing the parking lot and passenger unloading area over the past two weeks.
Lincoln County Davenport
If you’re looking for excitement this weekend, look no further than Davenport. This rural burg 36 miles west of Spokane is hosting its annual Pioneer Days festival. Saturday kicks off with a fun run, followed by a parade, 3-on-3 hoop tournament, free entertainment in the park and a belly-flop contest.
Pend Oreille County Newport
After meeting the teens in Pend Oreille County 4-H, hopefully you won’t say, “How rude!” Extension agents recently put on a program for teens called “How Rude!” to teach kids social graces as well as employment skills.
Spokane County Cheney
A new water purifying system for Fish Lake County Park could cost about $55,000 in an engineering estimate recently received by county parks officials. The budget for improvements at the park will cover the cost for the combined filtration and chlorination system.
Stevens County Chewelah
Locals see progress at the former L-Bar site owned by Northwest Alloys. The company removed 65,000 tons of hazardous material from the site already, with more to be hauled away around Aug. 1. The company has spent $4 million thus far on what will be a total cleanup.
Whitman County Colfax
Word has still not been received on the county’s grant application for a new grandstand at the county fairgrounds. The Palouse Empire Fair Foundation applied for $875,000 from the Paul Allen Foundation. Because so many applications are being considered, the foundation has pushed the notification date back to the end of July.
IDAHO Benewah County St. Maries
Les Schwab Tire has purchased the property and buildings that formerly housed Chase Chevrolet. The company bought the property to accommodate the growth of its St. Maries store. Earlier this year, the company bought the building and property north of its store at 930 Main that was the location of C.C. Service.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The University of Idaho Cooperative Extension System will sponsor a forest insect and disease field day July 30 in Sandpoint. Topics discussed include Douglas-fir beetle and other bark beetles, Armillaria and other root diseases, white pine blister rust, Indian paint fungus, Pini rot and other stem decays and dwarf mistletoes. Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Second Chance Animal Adoption volunteers are seeking foster families to temporarily take in puppies and adult dogs with special needs until permanent homes can be found. Dog food and vet care are provided. For information, call Alice Miller at (208) 267-2023.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
GTE is conducting a recycling drive to collect old telephone directories in Coeur d’Alene, Hayden and Post Falls. The recycling effort, in cooperation with Super 1 Food stores and Panhandle Recycling, will run July 16 through Aug. 13. Specially marked recycling containers will be located at Super 1 Food stores at 305 W. Kathleen in Coeur d’Alene, Highway 95 in Hayden and 805 E. Polston in Post Falls. Latah County Moscow
Moscow children attended Rendezvous for Kids art activities in East City Park July 10 and 11. Face-painting, brush-making and quilting were among Art Stop activities at the event. Artist Glen Grishkoff presented a “Brush with Music” workshop and a brush basketball performance.
Shoshone County Wallace
The Silver Country 1999 ATV Festival and Rodeo is in Wallace through Sunday. Events include an ATV parade Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by an ATV rodeo at 10 a.m. The rodeo will feature an obstacle course through a mud bog and drag races. MONTANA Lincoln County Libby
A National Public Radio signal is being considered for the Libby area. KUFM of the Montana Public Radio Network in Missoula has been contacted about putting a translator in the Libby area. KUFM currently has translators in Whitefish and other areas within the Flathead Valley. Reception from Spokane’s KPBX public radio station is also being investigated. A meeting is scheduled for July 29 at 7 p.m. at the Venture Inn to discuss proposals for the signal.
