Chiefs Will Open At Home; Schedule Includes New Year’S Night Game In Arena
The Spokane Chiefs will open their Western Hockey League season at home, on Sept. 25, a Saturday night.
The opener with the Tri-City Americans is one of 26 weekend dates in the season that includes a rare New Year’s night game in Spokane.
The Chiefs will play the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night, Jan. 1.
Spokane will also play its traditional New Year’s Eve game in Tri-City.
The Chiefs’ final regular-season home game will be on a Friday, March 24, with the Kelowna Rockets.
Although the above dates are firm, the schedule has yet to be confirmed, Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz said Monday. Confirmation is expected within two weeks.
The WHL has joined the NHL and the other two major junior leagues in adopting the 4-on-4 overtime format.
If the score is tied at the end of regulation, each team receives a point in the standings. A 5-minute sudden-death overtime will follow, with each team using four skaters. An extra point in the standings will be awarded to a team winning in OT.
The format is for regular-season games only.
The league also will allow both teams to warm up at the same time. Warm-ups for 7 p.m. games will start at 6:30.
