Kimmel Moves Into Playoffs

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

Who cares where you finish as long as it gets you into the playoffs?

Kimmel Athletic, Ferris’ AA American Legion baseball entrant, placed sixth out of 11 teams with a 10-10 record in the league’s South Division.

With a wild 13-12 Monday playoff victory in Lewiston, the team advanced to the first of three best-of-three series that ultimately qualify a team for state.

Kimmel opened play at Central Valley on Tuesday, losing 14-2 to division co-champion Spokane Olympic Sports. It was one of two games between four remaining playoff teams.

The tournament, which includes Spokane Athletic Supply of CV and Whitman County, continued Wednesday, and, if necessary, will be played today.

Should Kimmel survive the first round against SOS, a second playoff against the SAS-Whitman victor follows. Included is a doubleheader on Friday and 1 p.m. game Saturday, all at CV.

That will advance the South titlist to the league championship tournament at Shadle Park beginning on Tuesday.

Kimmel completed its regular season last week with three victories in five games, including 14-13 over Grocery Outlet from Freeman, a 13-3 romp past division co-champ Spokane Athletic Supply and completion of its marathon game against Spokane Federal Credit Union.

That game went 15 innings with Kimmel scoring five times to break a 4-4 tie.

Losses came in a doubleheader to Pullman.

Travis Wiles and Shawn O’Brien came up big for Kimmel all week.

Wiles, who hit safely in all six games the team played, drove in four runs with two hits during Monday’s 13-12 win over the third-place L-C Bucs in a loser-out playoff.

Kimmel trailed 8-0, scored nine runs in the fourth inning and took a 13-9 lead into the seventh.

O’Brien’s defensive stop ended the game and three-run LC rally. He also hit safely in all six games.

Wiles finished the week with 11 hits and O’Brien had nine.

YMCA tackle football registration still open

Players interested in the fifth- and sixth-grade YMCA tackle football league still can sign up to play.

Director Pat Estes said teams soon will be formed for the Grid Kids Contact Football League that begins practicing the week of Aug. 23.

“We’d like to get registration wrapped up by the first of the month,” Estes said.

Cost to play is $130, or $110 if a YMCA member. For information call 777-YMCA.
