ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

Gabriel Flores, 22, is using his fists to make a name for himself - and not in local back alleys. Flores, a member of the Othello Thunder Boxing Club, was recently chosen for a national amateur team to tour Canada. He did his country proud while up north, and has now been chosen to box in Thailand. Flores hopes to do well on the tour and eventually get a shot at the U.S. Olympic team.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Baseball is big in Republic. Currently, 148 youngsters are enrolled on local Youth Baseball teams. There are five boys fast-pitch teams, three girls softball teams and four T-ball teams hitting, throwing and catching on local diamonds. All of this is put together by five dedicated baseball association board members and 20 other volunteers. The season is over June 4.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

The recent “state of the college address” by Big Bend Community College President Bill Bonaudi was attended by 200 citizens. Is his speech, Bonaudi told the audience about student academic achievement and a broadening of the college’s programs and services. Big Bend opened branch campuses in several rural areas and has a satellite university. The college also serves nontraditional students with weekend and evening classes.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Reardan

Mark your calendars for June 5 and 6. The annual Reardan Mule Days are a must-see. This year, in addition to the parade, basketball tournament and kiddie carnival, the Mule Days committee will present free entertainment in the park. Featured this year will be Davenport’s famous Whistling Midgets, the Colville Sweet Adelines, the Children’s Civic Theater, Little Entertainers of Spokane and Syncopated Rhythm of Davenport.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Metaline

Local musician Donivan Johnson has taken his music international. His cantata “Arise, My Love,” based on the Bible’s “Song of Solomon,” is having its world premiere in Basel, Switzerland, on Saturday. Music director for Selkirk High School, Johnson is proud his work will be performed by the Regio-Chor in a concert that includes works by Bach, Purcell and Rutter. The cantata is written for brass quintet and choir.

STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

The Stevens County Sheriff’s Department has broken up a suspected methamphetamine lab in the Colville area found just off May Road on Colville Mountain. Acting on a tip, deputies raided the home and found partially disassembled meth equipment. The two suspects had fled the scene just prior to the raid, but were found in downtown Colville. Jason Keith, 25, and Tracy Mitchell, 36, are in custody.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Pullman

A Washington teachers organization honored Pullman couple Mary and Ed Schweitzer last week for their dedication to science education.

The Washington Science Teachers Association presented the special recognition award to the couple at the Pullman School Board meeting Wednesday. Since the 1991-‘92 school year, the Schweitzers have donated more than $300,000 to the PUllman School District to be used for math and science education.

St. Maries

Sandpoint

“Forest Management Shortcourse,” a six-session program for forest landowners, will be held Thursdays from June 17 to July 22. The program will give landowners a better understanding of forest ecology, silviculture, forest health, wildlife habitat and other forestry topics. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bonner County extension office.

KOOTENAI COUNTY

Post Falls

Post Falls School District is accepting sealed bids for computers until June 8. The district is seeking 70 new computers for the 1999-2000 school year to supply a high school lab as well as for teaching needs and classrooms. LATAH COUNTY

Moscow

Ginna Babcock, UI assistant professor of sociology, recently won the $3,000 Northern Rockies Consortium for Higher Education award. She proposed establishing a statewide summit on service learning, incorporating community service and volunteering in higher education and allowing students to bring service experience back into the classroom. She plans to organize a conference on the topic next spring.

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Kellogg

The city of Kellogg has announced alternate routes and emergency roads in the event of flooding. Those roads are the east end of the railroad right of way from Ross Ranch to Elizabeth Park, Mine Hall Road and Cemetery Road to Elizabeth Park. Troy

Cliff Bara of Troy was one of four Montana math teachers to receive a state Presidential Award for excellence in mathematics and science teaching. Each teacher will receive a $750 grant from the National Science Foundation and is a candidate for a national presidential award.
