Mead School District To Offer Summer Classes Program Comes After Years Of Requests By Parents In/Around: Mead
Mead School District is poised to finally offer summer school classes to students after years of requests from parents.
“I’ve been here six years and parents have asked about it year after year,” said Bruce Olgard, assistant principal at Mead High School. “Well, we’re going to try to start one.”
The regular school year ends June 11 with the summer school session scheduled to run June 15 through July 29. Class times will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Mead High School.
But classes are dependent upon student enrollment. Summer school will cost the district roughly $10,000 to pay for teachers and materials, Olgard said.
“Right now we don’t have nearly enough (students signed up),” he said. “We need at least 60 to break even.”
A half credit of summer school will cost $165 for students who register before June 5. Registration goes to $170 after that.
Enrollment is not restricted to students in the Mead district.
“Our focus will be on at-risk students who are academically deficient and trying to make up credits for graduation,” Olgard said.
In the past, students in the Mead district have had to take summer school classes in District 81, Riverside and East Valley School Districts, he said.
Classes scheduled to be offered are pre-Algebra, Algebra I A and B, Geometry A and B, English 9 A and B, English 10 A and B, Pacific Northwest History, World History A and B and U.S. History A and B. All classes are dependent on sufficient enrollment.
Registrations may be mailed to: Mead High School, Attention: Margaret Hibbard, 302 W. Hastings Road, Spokane, WA 99218. Or, stop by the school’s business office during the week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
