City Recreation Director Debbie Sanchez says a free summer program will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lions Park. Breakfast will be served upon arrival and lunch at 1 p.m.

FERRY COUNTY

The county’s fifth annual roadside cleanup was held recently. More than 40 people bagged 600 pounds of litter along Klondike, Cooke Mountain, Art Creek and Jack May’s Pride roads.

GRANT COUNTY

Moses Lake

The local economic development council is pleased with the commitment ASPI Enterprises has made in Grant County. ASPI has built a multi-million dollar manufacturing plant near Grant County International Airport, and plans to develop another 800 acres into an industrial park. The company will soon have its first warehouse ready for tenants. ASPI builds warehouses and industrial areas for light to heavy industrial use.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Odessa

Odessa Tigers track coach Blaine Downey wanted his athletes to win at the district meet so badly, he pledged he’d dye his hair blond if they made the grade. Eight tracksters gave their all to win state berths. Many of the kids threw or ran personal bests in their quest to call their coach “Blondie.”

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Newport

Six area schools recently competed in the Pend Oreille Forestry Environothon, which provided hands-on challenges that included measuring oxygen levels in water and identifying bark beetle damage. The team from Kettle Falls took top honors, with Colville coming in second.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Cheney

Fred A. Hurand of Cheney was recently elected as a fellow in the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was among 46 planners from 19 states inducted in the institute at a recent conference in Seattle. He has 25 years’ experience and is a professor of urban planning and public and health administration at Eastern Washington University.

STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

A drug-sniffing dog was the guest of honor at Colville High School recently. The dog, owned by the Chewelah Police Department, put on a demonstration. Students were impressed with the dog’s abilities. The K-9 officer will be back, but his visits will be unannounced.

WHITMAN COUNTY

BENEWAH COUNTY

Tensed

Tensed Days on June 5 will feature a four-wheeler obstacle course, a petting zoo and a quilt show. A parade will begin at 10 a.m., and vendors will sell food until 4 p.m. Tensed Days is sponsored by the Tensed Area Business Association.

BONNER COUNTY

Sandpoint

The county Shoreline Property Owners will meet today at the Sandpoint Elks Club. Directors will meet at 10 a.m. and members and guests at 10:30. Larry Shultz from Bonner County Waterways will discuss boating and water safety, Sen. Shawn Kehoe will inform owners about legislation that involved waterfront property and property taxes, and Rep. John Campbell will discuss changes in Fish and Game regulations.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

A public hearing on a special use application filed by Clifford and Mary Kramer scheduled for May 20 has been tabled until the June 17 Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the main courtroom of the county courthouse. The applicants want to amend a special use permit to allow the demolition of a motel and replace it with a two-story, 16-unit motel. For information, call (208) 267-7212.

LATAH COUNTY

Moscow

The University of Idaho’s College of Business and Economics became the first nonbusiness entity to win the Idaho Quality Award for Performance Excellence last week. The UI College of Business and Economics’ Integrated Business Curriculum was implemented for the 1997-98 school year. The IBC classes, which students start during their junior year, require fewer hours but more work than the standard system, and require 18 credit hours (as opposed to 21).

SHOSHONE COUNTY

Libby

The Skylights Summer Basketball Camp at Libby High School will be June 21-24 for girls entering grades five through 12 next year. The camp will be taught by the coaches and players of the Montana State University-Havre Northern Skylights. The first session, for fifth through eighth grades, will be 9 a.m. to noon and cost $40 per player. Grades 9-12 will take the court from 5-9 p.m. and cost $50 per person.
