The following people have been accepted for membership in the Spokane County Medical Society:

Dr. Richard L. Zahn has joined the Veterans Affairs Medical Center as medical officer of the day. He graduated from Creighton University in 1963, completed an internship at Orange County Medical in 1964 and a residency at University of California at Irvine Hospital in 1968.

Dr. Catherine M. Amlie-Lefond has joined Rockwood Clinic in the practice of child neurology. She graduated from UCLA in 1989, completed an internship and residency at the University of Colorado in 1994 and a fellowship, also at the University of Colorado, in 1995.

Dr. Todd R. Smith has joined Anesthesia Associates in the practice of anesthesiology. He graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1994 and completed an internship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in 1995 and a residency at the University of Washington in 1998.

Dr. Robert L. Hustrulid has established a solo practice in internal medicine. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1968 and completed an internship and residency at the University of Minnesota in 1971.

Dr. Mark P. Varga has joined Rehabilitation Associates in the practice of physical medicine/ rehabilitation. He graduated from George Washington University in 1987 and completed an internship at the Naval Hospital in 1988 and a residency, also at the Naval Hospital, in 1993. He completed an additional residency at Frazier Rehab Hospital in 1998.

Dr. Brad J. Ratcliff has joined Inland Imaging in the practice of radiology. Ratcliff graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1990 and completed an internship and residency at Parkland Hospital in 1996.

Dr. Robin D. Ratcliff has joined Inland Imaging in the practice of radiology. She graduated from Yale University School of Medicine in 1990 and completed a residency at Parkland Hospital in 1994.

Dr. Virginia S. Villalon has joined the Physicians Clinic of Spokane in the practice of nephrology. She graduated from the University of East Ramon in 1982 and completed an internship at Louis Weiss Memorial Hospital in 1990 and a residency at Grace Hospital in 1992. Villalon also completed a fellowship at Wayne State University Medical Center in 1994.

Dr. Clinton Poppel has joined Rockwood Clinic in the practice of gastroenterology. A 1988 graduate of Georgetown University, he completed an internship and residency at Saint Elizabeth’s in 1991. He also completed a fellowship at Stanford in 1997.

Dr. Laureli R. Erick has joined Physician Anesthesia Group in the practice of anesthesiology. She graduated from Loma Linda University in 1985 and completed an internship and residency, both at Loma Linda University, in 1989.

Klaus Gottlieb has joined Spokane Digestive Disease Center in the practice of gastroenterology. He graduated from the University of Bonn in 1987 and completed an internship and residency at Loyola University in 1991. Gottlieb completed a fellowship at Loyola University in 1993 and additional fellowships at Indiana University in 1994 and at Winthrop University in 1998.

Carla Preston, business development specialist for the Institute for Extended Learning’s Small Business Development Center, was chosen as a 1999 Star Performer by the Washington Small Business Development Center at Washington State University. The award “recognizes the highest levels of accomplishment within the SBDC network and sets a standard of achievement for others to emulate.”

Robert E. Ackerman, a Washington State University professor of anthropology and archeology, has received a Career Achievement Award from the Alaska Anthropological Association. The award recognizes Ackerman’s contributions to Alaskan archeology and support of the AAA. Ackerman, who joined WSU’s faculty in 1961 and has been director of the WSU Museum of Anthropology since 1987, has focused his research on the prehistoric entry of man from Asia into the Western Hemisphere and his subsequent use of terrestrial and marine resources.

Students and instructors of the Glen Dow Academy captured top honors in two areas at the Inland Empire Cosmetology Association semiannual competition. The students won the Student Traveling Trophy while the instructors won the Salon Traveling Trophy. The trophies are awarded based on points scored in make-up, men’s and women’s haircutting, evening total fashion hairstyling and finger waving. Individual winners in the student division included Stephanie Vessar in finger waving and Shawnette Silva in women’s haircutting. Martin Dow took first place in the women’s haircutting category of the professional division.
