Five years ago: President Clinton headed across the English Channel aboard the USS George Washington, en route to the 50th anniversary commemoration of D-Day in Normandy.

One year ago: A strike at a General Motors parts factory near Detroit closed five assembly plants and idled workers nationwide; the walkout lasted seven weeks. Volkswagen AG won approval to buy Rolls-Royce Motor Cars for $700 million. However, BMW later purchased the Rolls-Royce brand name and logo.
