White Supremacists Target Enumclaw

From Staff

The small city of Enumclaw has been targeted with white supremacist fliers that call for a “White Power” rally in front of City Hall on July 4.

The fliers urge white people to join together and “become an unstoppable army against the enemies of our race.”

The fliers were posted without permission outside the library, among other places. “We take them down and they put them back up,” said librarian technician Carol Hoiland.

Two weeks ago, two unidentified people visited City Hall to request permits for a “white pride” parade, Mayor George Rossman said. But he said they withdrew the request after learning they would need City Council approval.

City attorney Mike Reynolds said the city can’t legally stop a gathering on public property. But he said if the July 4 rally does materialize, city police will be present if needed.

The Northwest Coalition Against Malicious Harassment, based in the Seattle area, is trying to determine the source of the fliers.

“Ignore them and they’ll go away - that’s absolutely not true,” said the coalition’s executive director, Bill Wassmuth. “Ignoring them is tacit to approval. So we have to speak out against them.”
