Washtucna

High school freshman Danielle Ayers not only set a state record in the preliminary heat of the 100-meter hurdles at the State A/B track meet, but she also took home the gold medal at the end of the meet. Ayers also scored big in the long jump with a winning leap of 17 feet, 8-3/4 inches. She led the Tigercats to a 12th place finish overall.

Ferry County

Republic

Local officials are still in the hunt for state, federal and private money for tourism and beautification projects. Economic development specialist Dave Keeley recently attended a symposium to help him prepare a proposal for Phase II of the Republic Beautification Project. That phase includes a sidewalk from Stonerose Interpretive Center to the fossil dig site and to the Golden Tiger Bicycle, Pedestrian and Equestrian Pathway.

Grant County

Royal City

With cherry harvest getting under way, communities in the Royal Slope area are readying for the influx of migrant workers and their families. The Grant County Community Action Council will be looking after the basic human needs of workers. In the past, insufficient housing and health issues were a problem. This year, the state has allocated $18,000 for housing and medical relief.

Lincoln County

Davenport

Four Davenport eateries were burglarized last week. In total, thieves took more than $1,000 from Berry Bowl, Ellie’s Deli, Edna’s Drive In and The Cottonwood Inn. The burglars got into all four businesses by prying open a door. Police are looking for leads and say they have no suspects at this time.

Pend Oreille County

Metaline

Balancing the budget has been a painful process for the Selkirk School Board. The board recently cut $250,000 from its $3.25 million budget for the 1999-2000 school year. More than $175,000 from cash reserves was needed to finish this year. Declining student enrollment and dwindling state money are behind the cutbacks.

Spokane County

Deer Park

Gary and Opal Moulton were recently installed as commander and president of Veterans Wars Post and Auxiliary No. 3067 in Deer Park.

Stevens County

Williams Lake

They came to Stevens County to retire. Instead, Dr. Dale Landes and his wife, Betsy Landes, are full-time cattle ranchers. The couple was recently chosen as county Cattlemen of the Year. Dr. Landes, a semi-retired pediatrician from Montana, runs an 800-acre Black Angus ranch south of Williams Lake. He and Betsy, a registered nurse, say the two vocations are very compatible.

Whitman County

Garfield

The candidates for the Garfield-Palouse superintendent search will be available to answer questions, meet with community members and exchange information on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Garfield School.
