Concert Clinches It

Michigan state Sen. Dale Shugars wasn’t satisfied simply to hear about the antics of shock rockers like Marilyn Manson. He had to see them for himself. “He was like Satan,” said Shugars, a 46-year-old Republican whose own musical tastes run toward the Beach Boys. The experience prompted Shugars to lobby even harder for a bill that would require concert promoters or venue operators to put warning labels on tickets, posters or advertisements for any artist who has put out an album with a parental advisory label in the past five years. If it passes, it will be the first law of its kind in the country. The group that got parental warning labels put on albums, the Recording Industry Association of America, opposes the measure.
