Five Juveniles Suspected In Vandalism

Five juveniles, including one wielding a pellet gun, were arrested early Tuesday evening along the Spokane River following reports of vandalism in an area of warehouses along East Trent.

Police were called at 6 p.m. to Iron Bridge Masonry Products at 1225 E. Trent, said police spokesman Dick Cottam. The suspects were reportedly destroying cement blocks. The company is adjacent to other warehouses and an abandoned rail yard. Eight officers surrounded the suspects, catching three of the juveniles while the other two ran.

“The boy with the gun was running, and it was raining and very hard to see,” Cottam said. “Officers couldn’t recognize the suspect as a juvenile or the gun as a pellet gun - making it a very dangerous situation.”

The two were caught shortly after, one by a K-9 dog. The suspect was bitten by the dog and taken to a hospital, as is required by police after “canine contact,” police said. The five suspects, all between 13 and 15 years old, were booked into juvenile detention on charges of malicious mischief, Cottam said.
