Othello

Othello High School student athletes are hoping the answer is worth the wait. What is the question? Three Othello Huskies sports teams have won state titles this year, and students want to know if that is a state record. The Husky softball team captured the state title last month; the girls soccer team and the football team also took top honors. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association is researching the question.

Ferry County

Republic

Dogs taking their morning constitutional in Republic are causing a ruckus, knocking over trash cans and spreading rubbish. Republic has a leash law, and dogs are not permitted to run at will.

Grant County

Quincy

More than 900 citizens met following the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Augustino Travino last week. Residents wanted to know if the violence was gang-related and to ask if their children are safe in the Quincy schools. Fourteen-year-old Abel Espinoza is charged in connection with the crime. The school has stepped up daily security patrols.

Harrington

Kids playing “chicken” with oncoming trains will have to deal with Harrington Police Chief Mark Frank. Frank says he will enforce trespassing laws on all railroad rights of way in Harrington. Traffic may cross only at marked crossings, and trespassing at those marked “No Trespassing” will be strictly prohibited. “I’m not going to take a chance on them getting hurt,” Frank said.

Pend Oreille County

Metaline Falls

Visitors to the Kirtland Cutter Gallery can view the works of two area women this month. Vivian Markham’s acrylic paintings - both canvas and saw-blade art - are on display. She has lived in the Onion Creek area for 25 years. Jocelyn Harris’ paint, ink and clay creations also are on exhibit. She is an Inchelium, Wash., native and graduate of the Famous Artist School and Walla Walla College.

Deer Park

Deer Park and Riverside school districts, along with Spokane County Fire District 4 and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department, recently received a Risk Watch program grant. Risk Watch is a safety curriculum that focuses on eight risks of potential injuries. The school districts will pilot the program during the next school year.

Stevens County

The Northeast Washington Fair in Colville on Sept. 9-12 will benefit from state funds again this year. Seven county fairs in the 7th Legislative District will share $190,000 in state funds. Stevens County’s share is $29,375, with Pend Oreille getting $25,581 and Ferry receiving $24,397. The future of these rural fairs had been in question as state funds were said to be tight or nonexistent.

Pullman

A professional fireworks display and entertainment by the Kingpins classic rock band will be among the highlights of Pullman’s Fourth of July celebration. The event, which will include a barbecue and the American Legion dedication of a new flagpole, will be held in Sunnyside Park in Pullman starting at 5 p.m. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce still is seeking donations for the fireworks. St. Maries

The University of Idaho Cooperative Extension system is sponsoring a program in St. Maries on June 19 on thinning and pruning ponderosa pine stands. It will include presentations on fundamental concepts of thinning and pruning, pine bark beetle identification and damage, and financial and technical assistance. The Moscow Arts Commission’s Fresh Aire Concert Series in the Park will kick off its first six weeks with the arts commission’s Community Band. Celtic music by Potato Head will be featured July 15, Dan Maher will play folk music July 22, Atahualpa will perform South American music July 29, bluegrass by Coyote Special will be on tap Aug. 5, jazz by Wilson/Cannavaro is scheduled Aug. 12, Dixieland by the Snake River Six is set for Aug. 19 and acoustic rock will be performed by Uncle John’s Band on Aug. 26. Wallace School Board trustees have approved revisions in the district’s drug and alcohol policy. With the amendments, the policy is in accord with a bill passed recently by the Idaho Legislature. The new policies make it possible for school officials to search students if they have “reasonable suspicion” the students are violating drug or alcohol policy.

No-wake rules have been established for a number of lakes in the Thompson Chain of Lakes area by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission. The rules are designed to increase public safety, protect natural resources and reduce user conflicts on lakes. Lakes with the no-wake restriction include Banana, Bootjack, Cad, Cibid, Lavon, Leon, Lily Pad, Little Loon, Little McGregor, Little Rainbow, Lost, the channel between Middle and Lower Thompson, Myron, Rainbow, Topless and Upper Thompson.
